Your Goals. No Excuses. Stay Focussed.

May 30, 2009

Welcome back!

On my coaching programme, at the end of each session, a student notifies me of how many benefits, gains and what they learned during that session so that Progress is confirmed by both of us, and we have a record every session.

The average number of actual “takeways” or benefits gained is usually 5 or more for each of the 8 (about to become 12) sessions.

They also have to complete a homework assignment at the end of every session too, which enables them to apply what they’ve learned directly on their business marketing.

At the beginning of the coaching programme, I ask people what their favourite charity is.

They then have to pay the “consequence” of NOT completing their homework by making a donation of £10 to their favourite charity

and…

..if ever during the entire programme, that they ever utter any of the following words…

  • “Sorry”

Can you make everybody like you?

    May 28, 2009

..perhaps not, but you can take away every reason for them disliking you.

Everyone has their detractors and everyone has different opinions, likes and dislikes. I met a life coach this week, who said it was their mission in life “to be loved by everyone.” I thought how ironic, how selfish, how disappointed they were going to be.

    Wouldn’t you think?

I could almost understand “to love everyone”, by accepting their faults etc, but the more I thought of Mr. Life Coach….

    POINT 1 - SELFISH MARKETING

..the more I thought, “Blimey you’ve got it the wrong way round mate”. In my book he was breaking the #1 principle of marketing by committing “selfish marketing”. Quite often when people want more business or need more business, they can come across as selfish, needy even desperate on occasion. They focus all their attention on them, and crikey Mr. Life Coach spoke for about 10 minuites not asking a single question about me. Hey that’s fine, but crikey, as a 2 way communication device he was stuck on transmit. He needed to start taking an interest in others, instead of focussing on himself.

POINT 2 - IT’S ABOUT GIVING, NOT RECEIVING

Do you want a Job or Opportunity for Life?

    May 28, 2009

It used to be, goto school, goto university, get a good job in a large firm and you’ll be set for life.

Now teenagers are earning £1000, £5000, £10,000+ a month in some cases via the internet.

Furthermore, with all these large “safe” institutions not being “safe” anymore, I think the days of a “job” for life are gone.

But I firmly believe there is opportunity all around us every single day.

Some just aren’t able to recognise it.

Many opportunities are hidden bang in the middle of a crisis, a disappointment or a learning experience.

Sometimes opportunity can knock to find no-one in.

I phoned 2 landscape gardeners today - on both occasions, the phone rang and rang, weren’t conencted to ansaphones or redirected to mobiles.

    They both lost out.

Are you equipped for when an opportunity comes your way? Do you wait for it come knocking, or do you create your own?

Some people come up with great ideas, loads of ideas, but an idea is only any good if you put it into practice.

I’m convinced that opportunities only appear to gravitate to people who are out there trying to create them.

    Try This Simple Marketing Test

    May 27, 2009

Here’s an exercise some of you may recognise from one of my workshops.

    Requirements:

1 x Yellow Pages (This Years)

1 x Permanent Marker (or Flourescent Highligher)

    Directions

    A. Open the directory at your category of business.

    B. On each of the display / semi display / boxed ads, score out the name, address & phone number of each business.

    C. Look at what’s left in each of their ads.

    D. What’s really standing out about the ads on these 2 open pages of the directory or are many of them the “same”?

    E. Decide What they are really saying that diffferentiates themselves from you - and make a note.

    F. Do you solve the same problems, pains and frustrations? Do you offer more value? What do they really offer?

    G. How many actually list all the problems that they solve or fix for prospective clients?

Now go and do it, and write down your observations and feedback from the exercise, on a thread below.
